Study Tour To Nartiang Village, Jaintia Hills on 12th April 2024
On 12th April 2024, the B.A 6th Semester History Honours of Lady Keane College, Shillong along with the four faculty teachers of the Department of History as part of the study tour visited Nartiang Village, Jaintia Hills. The objective of this tour was to acquaint students about the various historical sites as well as culture of the people of the Jaintia hills. The trip started from the college campus at 9:00 am and reach Nartiang at 11am. On arrival, the first place the group visited the Nartiang Monoliths. This place has the largest collection of monoliths in one single site. The monoliths present here consists of Menhirs (upright stones) Moo Shynrang and Dolmens (flat stones in the horizontal position) locally known as Moo Kynthai. It was also seen that among the many monoliths structure, stands the tallest Menhir erected according to Jaintia legend by 'U Mar Phalyngki' to commemorate of the glorious events of the Jaintia kings (1500-1833 A.D). The next site near the Nartiang Monolith is the Durga Temple. It is a 500-year-old temple. According to Hindu beliefs, the Nartiang Temple is one of the 57 Shakti Peethas. Thereafter, the next stop was at the Larnai Village which was famous for its pottery by using a clay that was sourced from the Sung valley. The women potters informed that their art of making pots was practiced from their ancestors and still continues till date. Larnai pots or Khiew Ranei (Black clay pots) are used for various purposes, they make a variety of forms and sizes including cups, plates, bowls, water jars and more. The women potters informed that the clay is moulded and sundried and when the pots are ready, they are fired, after which they are coloured using the bark of the 'Sohliya' tree. The students have been benefitted from the study tour trip.
