DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY Estd. 1935

INTRODUCTION

The history of the Department of philosophy can be traced back right from the inception of the College, i.e. in 1935. Professor Braja Sundar Roy, the founder Principal of the College, and Miss Suprabha Datta were the first teachers of Logic (now renamed as Philosophy) in the Intermediate level (affiliated to Calcutta University). Lady Keane College started with an intake of eleven students, of which ten topped for Logic. B. A. courses started in the year 1936 and Philosophy (pass course) started in the same year with an appointment of another teacher, Miss Aparajita Ghose and Madam Usha Bhattachayya was appointed in 1937. In 1944 Madam Usha Bhattacharya took charge as Principal of the College. It was due to her tireless efforts that the College sought for and was granted permission (the College was then affiliated to Guwahati University) to open Philosophy Honours in 1958. In terms of results, the Department boasts of many University toppers. This outstanding track-record, the Philosophy Department continues to maintain.
