Lady Keane College, the first Women's College in North Eastern India, is located in the heart of Shillong city, the capital of Meghalaya. Shillong, the Scotland of the East, is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India, attracts tourists from far and wide for its enchanting scenic beauty.

Lady Keane College - A pioneer in women's education in the North-Eastern Region was established in the year 1935. It has contributed not only to the spread of women's education but also to the socio-economic transformation of the region. The history of the existence of the College is synonymous with the history of the educational development of the women in the region. In 1932, a high school named after Lady Keane, wife of the then Governor of Assam, was started in Jail Road, Shillong, and it was proposed that the College be attached to the School. In 1935, a number of prominent citizens of Shillong met together and decided to start an Intermediate College for girls. A Managing Committee was constituted with Shri. A. Das as the Secretary. A Bungalow called Groveside was acquired, which housed the college for the next two years and became the nucleus of all activities connected with the finding and acquisition of a permanent site for the College. The first meeting of the Managing Committee which met at Groveside on May 23rd, 1935, decided to open an Intermediate College from the next academic session beginning July,1935.

In 1938, the College was affiliated to the Calcutta University. In 1948, the College became an affiliate of the Gauhati University. Since 1973 when the North Eastern Hill University was founded, the College became an affiliate of it and continues to remain as one of its prized affiliated College till date. Tribal students of the North East make up the bulk of our present student strength. Students from other parts of the country are also enrolled in the College. The College has the necessary infrastructure facilities for Academics with a well-equipped Library. Internet facility is made available to the Staff and students. It also provide various forms of co-curricular activities like Sports, Debate, Quiz, also extra-curricular and extension activities like Cultural Programmes, Tours and Excursions, Rangering, N.C.C. and N.S.S. The founding fathers boldly declared that the institution shall be equipped with the necessary facilities to make our women useful and helpful members of the society capable of taking part in all and every activities tending to the moral, social, intellectual, physical and economic development of the community at large. Through the years this is what Lady Keane College has been trying to achieve and it is our commitment that in the years to come we shall endeavour to accomplish the same.

In 2009, Science Departments were considered under Star College Scheme funded by Department of Bio-Technology, New Delhi, Government of India. In furtherance to support under the Scheme, In 2011, the college was honoured once again when the Government of India chose it to function as a Bio-Tech Hub in the region.
